Weight Loss Percentage Calculator
See how much your weight has changed, how far you are toward a goal, and the weights behind your next 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% milestones.
See your weight change at a glance
Two weigh-ins show your percentage changed and total weight changed. Add a goal to see how far you have come and where each milestone lands.
Question 1 of 3
What weight did you start from?
The weigh-in you count from, treatment start or any date you choose.

Quick answer
Weight-loss percentage equals starting weight minus current weight, divided by starting weight, times 100: moving from 240 to 216 pounds is a 24-pound change and exactly 10% weight loss. In a large one-year study of adults with overweight or obesity and type 2 diabetes, losses of 5 to 10% improved blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol, which is why that band is widely treated as the first meaningful milestone. MeAgain's free weight-loss percentage calculator shows your change, percentage, goal progress, and where the 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% milestone weights land, private in your browser.
Bottom line: This calculator describes change from your chosen starting point. It does not decide whether weight loss is appropriate, explain why weight changed, or set a medically suitable goal.

How do you calculate weight loss from 240 to 216 pounds?
The same steps work in kilograms when both measurements use kilograms.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Find total change | 240 - 216 | 24 lb |
| Divide by starting weight | 24 / 240 | 0.10 |
| Convert to a percentage | 0.10 x 100 | 10% |
| Find the 15% milestone | 240 x 0.85 | 204 lb |
Key takeaways
Use the formula ((starting weight - current weight) / starting weight) x 100 to calculate weight-loss percentage.
Pounds and kilograms return the same percentage as long as starting and current weight use the same unit.
At a 240-pound starting weight, the 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% loss milestones are 228, 216, 204, and 192 pounds.
A percentage makes progress comparable across different starting weights, but it does not show body composition, nutrition status, symptoms, or whether the change is intentional.
MeAgain can continue the one-time calculation with weight logs, a trend chart, Journey Cards, food, hydration, doses, and symptoms in one timeline.
Weight Loss Percentage Formula, Example, and Limitations
The exact weight-loss percentage formula
Weight-loss percentage = ((starting weight - current weight) / starting weight) x 100.
Total weight change = starting weight - current weight. Milestone weight = starting weight x (1 - milestone percentage as a decimal). For a 5% milestone, multiply by 0.95. For a 10% milestone, multiply by 0.90.
If current weight is above starting weight, the formula produces a negative loss percentage. That simply describes a net gain from the selected starting point. It is not a judgment about health or progress.
Milestone weights from a 240-pound starting point
These are mathematical checkpoints, not a prescription to reach every percentage.
| Loss milestone | Calculation | Milestone weight |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | 240 x 0.95 | 228 lb |
| 10% | 240 x 0.90 | 216 lb |
| 15% | 240 x 0.85 | 204 lb |
| 20% | 240 x 0.80 | 192 lb |
What this percentage leaves out
- Normal day-to-day changes from hydration, food, sodium, clothing, and scale conditions.
- Whether weight change came from fat mass, lean mass, fluid, or a combination.
- Whether the starting weight is clinically meaningful or simply a date you chose.
- Pregnancy, growth, illness, eating-disorder history, or unintentional weight loss.
- Whether a particular target or rate is safe and appropriate for you.
Unexpected or unintentional weight loss, dizziness, dehydration, persistent vomiting, or difficulty eating warrants professional attention. A percentage calculator cannot assess the cause or urgency of a change.

Weight Loss Percentage Calculator - FAQs
Subtract current weight from starting weight. Divide that change by starting weight, then multiply by 100. If you started at 200 pounds and now weigh 190, the calculation is ((200 - 190) / 200) x 100 = 5%. Use the same unit for both inputs.
