Ozempic Basics: What to Know While You Track
Ozempic is semaglutide, a weekly shot made by Novo Nordisk. The FDA label approves it together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart-related death in those who also have heart disease, and to lower the risk of worsening kidney disease, kidney failure, and death from heart disease in those who also have chronic kidney disease. Ozempic also comes as a daily pill, on a separate label it shares with Rybelsus. The pill is taken once a day, from 1.5 mg up to 9 mg, with a 30-minute wait before food, drinks, or other pills, and it is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes, both for blood sugar and for heart risk. In the SUSTAIN 6 trial described on the label, 3,297 adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease took Ozempic or a placebo; over a median of 2.1 years, 6.6% of those on Ozempic had a heart attack, a stroke, or a heart-related death, against 8.9% on placebo.
The most common side effects on the label are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and constipation. That is why the dose starts low and rises in steps. The label also covers a missed shot: take it within 5 days, or skip it and stay on your usual day.
